The 2019 show season got off to a flying start with the SIG picking up the award for best club/sig display. A huge thanks must go to the members who contributed to the display and to our hosts IPMS Bolton. Here are a few images from the main hall and mezzanine.
Scale Model World 2018 was our second display at the 'nationals'. A special thanks must go to our 'Oberleutnant' Rob Bedford who set up our display. This year's display was the year of the Gigant with two of them debuting at SMW 2018. It was an interesting display in terms of damage but the less said about that, the better. As well as the transport builds we had an eclectic mix of subjects and we are inching towards our ambition to tell the complete story of German military aviation. I've included many more images from SMW 2018 on this page, which shows German subjects on tables around SMW 2018. Wing Nut WingsThe highlight of the show was the undoubtably the first visit by Wingnut Wings who brought along test shots of their 1/32nd Lancaster. Several SIG members picked up some half price damaged box kits so expect to see some WW1 kits added to the display in the not too distant futures. Something of a more Luftwaffe related nature was the launch of Wingleader Magazine. A new magazine that will most likely will contain plenty of Luftwaffe articles. New ReleasesAirfix's recent re-release of their 1/48 scale Bf 109 was accompanied by a diorama depicted the same scene of a crashed Bf 109. Airfix also brought along their soon to be released 1/72 scale two seat 262. On the Zoukei Mura stand were a couple of Luftwaffe related subjects but there releases are some way off. CompetitionThe Senior National Champion competition winner was almost German, an Austro-Hungarian Oeffag-Mickl G Series Flying Boat built by George Tenediotis. A few German military subjects were scattered throughout the classes.
September saw the SIG display at two shows, the East Ridings of Yorkshire Model Show in Driffield and IPMS Keighley Model Show 2018 ‘First Edition’. Here are some pictures from the first of the shows, Driffield. The show at Driffield was a first outing for Any Molyneaux's 1/32 Eduard 109 and an RAF interloper (to celebrate the RAF 100 centenary). I've also included a few images of German subjects on other tables. The SIG 144 display was a highlight. The Keighley Model Show daw Rob Bedford organise another stunning display. a huge thanks to everyone who added models to the table. The first issue of The Eagle is ready, download it in an ePub or pdf format.
Yesterday the SIG visited the Canberra Club at Bae Salmlesbury to attend a new show on the calendar run by IPMS Lancashire. The SIG members who attended had a really good time at the show and we look forward to attending again next year. Our ace builder, Rob Bedford managed to add another medal to the silverware cabinet.
I managed to get pictures of most of the models that were on display. Our next display is only a few weeks away at Driffield. Follow this link for our show calendar.
It could prove to be a very useful reference. The images below are proof that I've struggled in the past to get a decent set of walk around images.
The German military was well represented in the static display at RIAT 2018. The following walk arounds have been updated:
The following new aircraft have also been added to the walk around collection*. Aircraft appeared in three camouflage schemes. The Transall C-160 was in a heavily weather Norm-83 scheme. The two Tornados were in Norm-95 and the contemporary overall blue grey (as were the Eurofighter and Airbus A400). Last weekend saw the car packed for the long journey up to the North East of England for the Northern Model Show. It's beyond my usual 2 hour radius but I make an exception for this excellent show. I'll start with a general view of the show that is held in a large sports hall with good well balanced artificial lighting. The show draws in SIGs and clubs from the north of England and Scotland so there is a slightly different mix of displays from shows elsewhere in England. There are also plenty of traders willing to take your hard earned cash. Catering is a strong point for this show. Food is served throughout the day with plenty of hot and cold options. Tea and coffee is £1 and a hot dinner came in at £6. Two displays of note was an excellent RAF 100 display and the debut of the Star Wars SIG And finally onto some Luftwaffe models. The first set is from models in the competition. The superbly posed Eindecker was in the Junior category. Best in show went to an excellent 1/32nd scale A6 Intruder. The next gallery is of Luftwaffe models on display around the show. This included a rather impressive Luftwaffe '46 display. Last, but by no means least is our own display. Members displaying models for this display were Andy Hardwick, Andrew Walker and Nathan Robinson. We also had Phil Flory's Transall and Me 262 making the journey up north. A number of models that are going to form part of the Lufttransportgeschwader SMW display also made their debut.
