WWII Colour Matches

Before I begin,  it is almost impossible to provide an accurate reference to modellers. All RLM 70's should be the same 'farbton' or hue, but unfortunately they are not. There is a subtle difference between different publications and different paint manufacturers. Variation is not only application to model paint manufacturers. It could even be suggested that RLM 70 applied more thinly, over different surfaces from the same batch of paint could have a different appearance or hue. There is also the impact of weathering with aircraft being exposed to sunlight over a period time giving some variation in hue.

Whilst I intend to provide to a good paint match, I feel it is impossible to be exact (in the truest meaning of the word). If you do find yourself getting into a debate (or dare I say it, argument) about a model, take a look at the ambient light: chances are the model is having an awful tungsten yellow-orange light cast upon it which somewhat renders the debate null and void.

If a definitive reference is to be found, then K. A. Merrick and Jürgen Kiroff are thought to provide it in 'Luftwaffe Camouflage and Markings 1933‑1945 Volumes 1 and 2'. The bad news is that both books are somewhat expensive as they are not currently in print.
